The Beautiful Truth About Sustainable Mango Wood
When we think about living sustainably, we usually look at the food in our fridge, the clothes we wear or the vehicle we drive, yet a minority of us ever consider whether the furniture in our homes is sustainably manufactured.
The truth is that the furniture manufacturing industry has fallen short of sustainable choices, usually putting style before the environment. Therefore, we were fascinated when we first heard about mango wood.

What is Mango Wood?

Mango wood is, fundamentally, the by-product of an already flourishing industry: Mango fruit - minus the sweet and juicy taste. This special, tropical tree is originally from Far East Asia, Native to India and is now made in Kenya and Mexico. Unlike oak trees that take up to 100 years to mature, mango trees mature quickly, reaching 80-100 feet in around 15 years.

Why is Mango Wood Sustainable?

Once the Mango trees stop producing its fruit, they are harvested for timber and can be used for furniture. After that, mango farmers continue to plant a new generation of trees so that the cycle of fruit production can continue. This means that it is only the trees that have stopped producing mangos that will be cut down for furniture production. For this reason, creating furniture from mango wood relieves deforestation of endangered tree species such as teak. Using mango wood from cut-down trees reduces carbon emissions, because the wood is not left to rot.
Fact: rotting wood produces carbon dioxide.

Why is Mango Wood perfect for furniture?

The best part is mango wood is strong and durable and has an added quality of being highly resistant to water. As you can see, there is so much to be said for mango wood becoming the sustainable choice for furniture making. Furthermore, it is stylishly beautiful which will last generations.
